For over two decades, I've been deeply committed to the cause of educating Afghan girls, women, and boys through Afghan Friends Network, an organization I co-founded. Our journey in the province of Ghazni has been one of both triumphs and challenges.

During our time, we achieved significant milestones, raising over $600,000 and implementing various educational initiatives with our dedicated on-the-ground partners. We educated 4,300 girls, empowered 350 mothers with literacy skills, and provided English education to over 1,000 boys. Additionally, our scholarship programs supported the higher education of 26 girls and 8 boys, paving the way for their future success.

Amidst AFN’s efforts, one remarkable success story stands out – that of Fahima, who received a scholarship from AFN in 2009. She became a highly sought-after nurse/midwife in her district, earning more than her father and brothers combined. Her community reveres her for her achievements, affectionately calling her Dr. Fahima.

However, despite our dedication and the achievements of the local educators, the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan has forced us to discontinue our schools and programs. The situation has become increasingly challenging, with our teachers in hiding and our school leadership forced to flee the country due to threats to their lives.

Despite these adversities, I remain immensely proud of the impact we've made in Ghazni province. Our work has not only transformed individual lives like Fahima's but has also contributed to the broader community's prosperity and empowerment. As we navigate these turbulent times, I hold onto the belief that the seeds of education and empowerment we've sown will continue to bear fruit, even in the face of adversity.

When women and girls are treated equally, with dignity and respect, and afforded every opportunity to contribute to society, families, communities and whole nations thrive. I am so heartened to know that the donations of Dining for Women participants have funded such remarkable grassroots groups as Somaly Mam in Cambodia, Afghan Friends Network in Afghanistan, and the Maasai Girls Education Fund in Kenya. I have seen firsthand the impact of these groups and countless others. Now more than ever, everyone can make a difference through acts large and small, and I congratulate you and thank you for your contribution toward ensuring that all women and girls have the opportunity to fulfill their God-given potential.”
